It has had a stake in cyber security risk for many years and is the organisation responsible for maintaining the well-regarded Common Vulnerability and Exposures (CVE) database that holds details of technical vulnerabilities in software.

It has undergone several revisions since then, with extensions of its scope and the addition of other “flavours” of the matrix for different categories of system.
